Job Hunting in Today Work Market
I have been in Norris Tennessee for almost a month now, job hunting.
In this past month I have sent out almost 80 resumes. So far I have not only
not found a job but only had 3 interviews. There is nothing worse for your
self esteem that not having a job and not having any luck finding one.
As versed as I am in self awareness and feeling good about yourself, it is hard
not to take it personally when you know you are applying for jobs you know
you can do, but not even getting a chance to interview for them.
This is what most job hunters are facing right now. When you finally get
a chance to be interviewed you are nervous and want to make the best impression
possible. I do great at interview when I get them, but still I don’t
get the job. This makes you think, what did I do wrong? Most of the time
it is not you but personal choice of the interviewer. I having interviewed for
jobs that I am way over qualified, did good on the interview and still get
turned down. It is hard not to take it personally.
It is hard for me to find a job because jobs that I am more than able to do
require a degree. I do not have one so, they pick something that has no
experience at doing the job just because they have the degree. That is so
wrong. Employers need to consider facts that we all know, In college you
get a degree, but it is working that makes you good at what you do. I have
been eating, sleeping and drinking computer repair for 27 years. That does
not even compare with 4 years of college with a couple semesters of computer
classes.
Don’t get me wrong I am a big supporter of a college education. Each of my
son’s has degrees. You need that to get a job in todays market. It is not a
piece of paper that makes you good at your job. It is work experience and
your work ethic that does. I am 51 and do not have any interest in going
back to college to get a degree that I don’t really need anyway.
Some of you might say, well you do need the degree, to get a job. Well, you
are right, I guess in this time in my life where my kids are grown and gone I
just really don’t care. I know I will find a job eventually and have my computer
business on the side.
